As spring crawls on our doorstep SKOGEN returns with their brand new album "I Döden" (In Death), the fourth mark in their legacy of bleak, dark and highly atmospheric musical adventure. Taking a few steps back to the days of "Vittra" and "Svitjod" SKOGEN manage to blend the past, combined with new fantastic elements that surely reflects their always recognizable sound in a most pleasant way. "I Döden" is a gloomy journey through hollow stone lands that places it's listener on a pedal of northern darkness and death!
Skogen is an Atmospheric Black Metal band from Växjö, Sweden, formed in 2009. In the veins of Drudkh. Current label - Frostscald Records. Formed in 2009.
Upon first coming across Sweden’s Skogen, I was half expecting a bland and boring dedication to the old school Scandinavian scene due to the fact that this twosome of J. Svensson and M. Nilsson operate under such a horribly generic name.
However, this atmospheric black metal band are definitely not just another by-the-book dedication to a scene long put to bed. I, like a lot of people, need to be inspired and turned on by the aesthetics of a band in order to listen to them.
Re-issue of SKOGEN's third album ”Eld”. After being out of print for a long time, it feels good to finally be able to present this classical album once again. "Eld", which was the sequel to the wonderfully atmospheric creation "Svitjod", possesses a darker tone than its' predecessor and brings us back to an elder era of superstition and witch hunts. Dark & Folky Swedish metal of high quality.
Under a frozen Swedish moon, Skogen have their sonic pentagram of albums in homage to the stark, nebular beauty of their motherland. Theirs is a blackened folkish metal possessed by the mysteries of nature and dedicated to paying homage to its majesty, both in light and darkness. This polarity is felt in the music as subtly beautiful melodies and clean vocals are woven into the more pervasive darker tones that saturate Skuggorna Kallar, like the blanket of night, heavy with dew. You could say that it is simultaneously the band’s most complete and darkest work to date.
