It’s been 11 long years and now the world will finally see the return of Burzum. The highly anticipated new album is entitled Belus after the name of the ancient European solar deity of light and innocence. Belus is Burzums 8th studio album, and the sound and music of the new album can best be compared to the music of some of the old Burzum albums; in particular the ground breaking Hvis Lyset tar Oss and the atmospheric brilliances of Filosofem, only the ambient parts present on these albums has been almost completely left out on Belus. Belus is a hard hitting and melodic guitar driven album and will firmly keep Burzum at the helm of the metal / black metal scene and arguably his best album to date.
Burzum says of the new album and his style of music:
"My ambition with Belus is to create something I -- and hopefully others too -- can listen to for years and years to come without ever growing tired of it, and at the same time to share with my audience the experience of getting to know Belus, as he might have been perceived by the ancient Europeans. I am aware of the black metal association with the name Burzum, and I have no real and serious problem with that, but I personally see no reason to place Belus in any category. I think Belus musically transcends all existing categories, but if I have to choose one -- and for the sake of simplicity -- I will simply place it in the metal category".
MAYHEM: One of the earliest of the Norwegian black metal bands to form (aptly named after a Venom track) the bands 20 year history is littered with tragedy and controversy. Now Back On Black re-issues the bands 4 studio albums on deluxe audiophile quality vinyl. All editions of these classic black metal albums are on coloured vinyl and come in gatefold packaging!
"Outre" sees Portal take their adhering style of surreal demented bizarre death metal (although Portal really transcend such a term these days, especially in this day in age where most bands that pass as "death metal" present a feeble display, far from what true horrifying death metal should encompass) and take it to a much more disturbing paradigm, than was found on the band's monumental "Seepia" observation.
Overall, such an album as "Outre" will only alienate Portal even more from the so-called death metal scene of today. Were most musicians like to play it safe and typical in such a genre, where things become easy to comprehend, Portal merely transcend all boundaries and go much beyond into a realm where no other band in the genre dare step foot in (on a musical and lyrical sense).
The latest work of death metal psychosis from Australia... PORTAL's "Swarth" is the death metal release that invokes the end of the world and is Portal's most surreal, disturbing, and irregular offering to date. The approach to Portal's style of death metal has always tread the fine line between sheer madness and the intricately artful. Cinematic in scope, like a death metal interpretation of The Cabinet Of Dr. Cagliari or the death metal soundtrack to an ancient silent arthouse flick gone terribly awry, Portal have pretty much transcended the interpretation of what death metal should portray, and simply inverted and twisted it to no end. Even moreso on "Swarth".
"Seepia" is the debut album by PORTAL originally released in 2003. A vision of utter horror, 'Seepia' is perhaps one of the most unique and intimidating albums ever conceived. Depraved, artsy and morally-impaired, through a twisted mindfuck of oppressive histrionics and the class of classic avant-garde cinema, Portal portrays theatrical musical dementia through a death metal lens.

After the two albums Nattestid and Bjoergvin, Taake completed the trilogy with Doedskvad. Recorded at Grieghallen Studios, with guest appearances from cult black metal artists such as Nattefrost (Carpathian Forest), Nordavind (ex-Carpathian Forest) and Taipan (Orcustus), Doedskvad is a pure, cold and grim black metal masterpiece. Doedskvad has not been pressed on vinyl since 2016 but is back in 2018 on an extremely limited run.

Massedød (Manna fra en annen himmel)”, their long-awaited 4th album “Ingen Skånsel” is ready to be unleashed - and Koldbrann is sounding rawer, harsher and better than ever. Even though deeply rooted in the True Norwegian Black Metal tradition, Koldbrann has carved out their own sound within the genre confines and it sounds fresh, raw and different. There’s a fierce nerve running through the album, and the songs stand out from today’s typical black metal sounds. You can feel the aggression throughout the whole album. “Ingen Skånsel” is one of the most interesting, aggressive and fierce Norwegian black metal albums in modern times!
Hymns from the deep is an exploration of the dark depths of Moria from J.R.R. Tolkien’s venerated The Lord of the Rings. The lyrics are one long epic poem written by Myrddin Evans, based on the chapter 'The Bridge of Khazad Dum' from The Fellowship of the Ring. This spans across the tracks of the album which musically draws influence from funeral doom, death metal, black metal and dark ambient. All music and instrumental performances come from Daniel Scrivener with Matthew Surry channeling the voice of the Balrog to complete the project. This is cavernous and foreboding funeral doom that is highly recommended to fans of EVOKEN, THE RUINS OF BEVERAST, ESOTERIC.
