Five long years after their fascinating debut, Milan-based duo A Pale December deliver their sophomore album, Death Panacea. Compared to The Shrine Of Primal Fire, Death Panacea steers towards more aggressive, warring sounds. The “atmospheric black metal” label which so aptly described their debut album, is now just one of the many, partial definitions which could be used to define the band’s music.

When asked about their new opus, multi-instrumentalists Riccardo Di Bella and Ernesto Ciotola provided the following, strong statement: “While many metal albums seem to appeal to a feeling of fierceness, a call to war, an urge to fight something, we wanted to express the opposite. Death Panacea is an album about defeat and hopelessness, about the inherent futility of human strife and all our laughable attempts at masking this unescapable nature.

We wanted to praise failing and giving up, as opposed to perseverance, pride and the grinding mentality. We wanted to praise the rejects above the leaders, who naively think they can escape this race towards oblivion, and the coward above the fighting man, whose only fault was believing in the frail concept of nation and a false sense of belonging.

While distancing ourselves from these delusional sentiments, we also didn't want to fall into optimistic nihilism; the idea that the awareness of an impending void can grant any peace is simply preposterous. 

Ultimately, this is the meaning that lies behind the title of the album: death is what keeps us in check and yet is the one and only panacea to all our anguishes. In all this, one could almost find a cold comfort, knowing that the top step of the podium is eventually just a springboard to the abyss”.

Opening with a fug of crypt-dwelling ambience, and the distant howls of the bloodthirsty Wampyre, building through riff and atmosphere towards a clearer skied climax in the more epic medievalism from Ages of Blood. A perfectly ascendent split with euphoric trajectory from the raw to the radiant, balanced by the pivotal Beulenpest who features in both projects.

After six years in deathlike repose, Predatory Light returns. From beneath churchyard stones, the bare, ruined choir sets forth to drape the world in its nocturnal lightings. Once again established in the spiritual desert of the southwest, the devil’s quartet has been reanimated by the same infernal regents that compose the deadly Superstition. As a result, the four musicians that conceived ‘The Anatomy of Unholy Transformation’, in Predatory Light, delve into far bleaker corners of their dark twisting subconscious. “Death And The Twilight Hours”, the second album from Predatory Light is comprised of four towering mazes of infernal technicality, ancient evil, and eerie church nightmare Black Metal of the South European and South American style. These four hymns conceptually meditate on the triumph of death during times of plague, focusing on the psychological terror and rapture of humanity’s impending doom. Borrowing imagery from Boccaccio’s account of the plague in his native Florence and inspired by Lucretius’ record of the Athenian Plague, Predatory Light explores the historical mindset of human sin and torment- evoking the archetypal personification of death as it tethers human consciousness to the realm of earthly suffering. The sinister, spectral guitars that drift like cemetery mist over everything and beckon for release tell the story on “Death And The Twilight Hours” as much as the scathing diseased vocals guiding the path. Now resolutely ascendent, Predatory Light’s return heralds the second coming of one of US black metal’s immense outliers.

Il formato EP deve essere molto gradito ai francesi Moonreich dal momento che, all'interno della loro decennale carriera, questo "Wormgod" è già il terzo e segue, ad un solo anno di distanza, il precedente "Fugue", entrambi rilasciati dalla sempre valida ed attenta Les Acteurs de l'Ombre Productions, etichetta che alla quantità preferisce la qualità.
Come di consueto in casa Moonreich, per lo meno con le ultime uscite, si fa fatica a parlare "solo" di Black Metal analizzando la loro proposta vista la molteplicità delle influenze e, soprattutto, la complessità di una musica finemente arrangiata, variegata nel suo incedere e, cosa non sempre scontata nel genere, suonata e prodotta in maniera perfetta.
"Wormgod" è un album, dunque, molto ricco: i francesi riescono ad unire efficacemente death, black, atmosfere ortodosse, concessioni alla melodia, magistrale brutalità (ascoltate con attenzione la spettacolare "To Crawl this World") ed a risultare convincenti anche quando si cimentano nella cover in chiave estrema di "Broken" dei Depeche Mode.
Appare chiaro che i Moonreich siano un gruppo di spessore e che la loro musica debba essere ascoltata con attenzione per coglierne ogni sfumatura ed ogni variazione poiché, anche all'interno dello stesso brano, diversi sono i cambi di registro, molteplici i saliscendi ritmici e imprevedibili gli sviluppi pur se, occorre sottolinearlo, l'ambito di azione del gruppo resta sempre fortemente estremo e devastante.
Tra dissonanze urticanti, ottimi assolo di chitarra, velocità assassine e brutalità debordante, "Wormgod" è un album che va gustato tutto di un fiato più e più volte, ogni volta alla ricerca del particolare sfuggito nell'ascolto precedente.
Come al solito, bravi davvero!
