Time flies and it's hard to realize 5 years has already passed since the last MANII output; the fantastic and uneasy Sinnets Irrganger. The bleakness of that album is a rarity and it's still an album I keep going back to in the darkest days and moods of the year. Make no mistake: Innerst i Mørket continues right where they left off, but that said, this time the music is even darker, though with a bigger sound contributed by the eminent drummer V. Enride behind the kit, better known from WHOREDOM RIFE and SYNING, to mention a few. As always, MANII delivers severely dicomforting and haunting music, something Cernunnus is an absolute master of as one might know from his other projects like MANES, SYNING, LETHE and more, again completed with some of the most impressive vocals I've heard in years by Sargatanas(old MANES). I dare say this is their best release to date, and you can quote me on that.

Fordæðuskapr (Old Norse for ‘sorceryʼ or ‘witchcraftʼ) is a new band by S.D. which was started in early 2022. Similar to S.D.ʼs primary artistic output Árstíðir lífsins, ‘Hræflóð markar fjallaʼ is sung entirely in Icelandic and contains lyrics taken from the rich corpus of Old Norse skaldic poetry.

The texts have an apocalyptic character and mainly deal with themes related to death, violence and bloodshed. Appropriately, ‘Hræflóð markar fjallaʼ may be translated to ‘Carrion flood of the wood of the mountainsʼ. The album features six songs with a total playing time of 38 minutes and contains both modern and classic Black Metal elements stemming from older Norwegian and current Icelandic metal scenes.

One of the visionaries of the mid-1990’s Norwegian Black Metal evolution, DHG are widely hailed as masters of dark and psychotic Psychedelic-tinged extremity. This edition of Satanic Art includes two bonus tracks, Black Treasure and an alternate rendition of Symptom.

Since emerging in the early nineties, KATATONIA has projected a beacon of light for the forgotten and the lonely ones, offering solace to those willing to lose themselves in the band’s immersive soundscapes. From their roots in death-doom metal to the post-metal entity they embody today, their art remains as haunting as ever. Nightmares as Extensions of the Waking State marks the next step in KATATONIA’s evolution, building upon the foundation of their previous album, Sky Void of Stars (2023). Crystal-clear production highlights the interplay between silence and intensity, while the contrast of heavy riffs, delicate guitar harmonies, ethereal synthesizers, and atmospheric nuances create captivating tension. Tracks like ""Thrice"" and ""Warden"" pulse with dynamic energy, while ""Lilac"" sees Jonas Renkse’s unmistakable vocals intertwining with hypnotic rhythms and progressive elements. A near-ceremonial piece, ""Wind of No Change"", merges subtle electronic textures with KATATONIA’s enigmatic soundscapes, while ""Temporal"" balances fragility and strength - its intense verses culminating in a soaring, emotionally charged chorus. The breathtaking ""Efter Solen"" (Engl. After the Sun), featuring Swedish lyrics, evokes echoes of Jonas Eika’s 2018 short story collection, with minimalistic yet striking instrumentation.

Even after more than 30 years, KATATONIA continues to redefine the emotional spectrum of their genre, effortlessly shifting between haunting vulnerability and commanding artistry. With sonic landscapes that evoke dystopia, inner demons, purity, and beauty alike, Nightmares as Extensions of the Waking State stands as a testament to their enduring brilliance. Formed in 1996 and known as one of the most controversial and musically brilliant bands in the black metal scene and beyond, SHINING presents their eleventh offering that proves even darker and more brutal than ever before. According to the band themselves, Shining “will be a downward journey in stereo that will drown the world in a mesmerizing, inescapable darkness".
