Seven years without a new studio album by long-running Swedish black metal act DARK FUNERAL was a tough time for its worldwide legions of fans, but finally in 2016, two decades after the release of the band's legendary debut album “The Secrets Of The Black Arts” a new aeon is about to begin. And, DARK FUNERAL's sixth studio album, “Where Shadows Forever Reign”, produced by Daniel Bergstrand (In Flames, Dimmu Borgir, Behemoth), actually refers back to the aforementioned first album in several ways: Firstly, it proudly comes along with stunning artwork by Necrolord (Dissection, Necrophobic, Emperor) just like “The Secrets…” back in ‘96, secondly, it also marks a debut of sorts as it is the first DARK FUNERAL opus with new vocalist Heljarmadr (Grá). His vitriolic snarl finds a perfect match in Lord Ahriman's trademark riffing, and shines on the intense opening track, which would not have felt out of place on 1998's “Vobiscum Satanas”, as well as on the slower epic, “As I Ascend”, the diverse “To Carve Another Wound”, or the grim finale “Where Shadows Forever Reign”. Rewarding their fans to the fullest with an incredibly strong new album burning with passion and determination, DARK FUNERAL shall celebrate a triumphant return...in the sign of the horns.

Indeed, with the razor-sharp execution across Diabolis Interium, DARK FUNERAL were perfect ambassadors for the sound, and for Swedish black metal in general: many bands had come and gone over the ‘90s, but there they stood, sticking to their guns – and spiked gauntlets. Alongside contemporaries Dissection and Marduk, DARK FUNERAL are among the most important Swedish black metal bands ever. In fact, when one merely mentions the phrase “Swedish black metal,” thoughts immediately turn to their name: since their formation in 1993, DARK FUNERAL quickly came to define the shocking sound of cryogenic melody and cruelly blasting fury. Though their six albums to date have been patiently parceled out over a considerable amount of time, their works endure to this day and have influenced countless bands over the past 20 years.
Originally released in the autumn of 2005, of DARK FUNERAL's fourth album, Attera Totus Sanctus, was arguably the band's fastest and fiercest record ever – which is all the more remarkable given the band's longevity to that point. Where most bands soften or slow down as they get older – or break up, respectably, before ruining their good name – DARK FUNERAL proved that age is just a number and made their razor-sharp yet always-melodic sound that much more nuclear-powered. In fact, that they were able combine such amazingly blitzed speeds with melodies that are highly memorable, even at those speeds, is something that's black magick indeed… And another fiery album cover proved that nothing could extinguish DARK FUNERAL's inferno!

Originally released in the autumn of 2009, of DARK FUNERAL's fifth album, Angelus Exuro Pro Eternus, completes something of a trilogy with the predecessors Diabolis Interium (2001) and Attera Totus Sanctus (2005), in that they all featured the band's fastest and fiercest work yet along with suitably fiery cover artwork. However, that's not to say that Angelus Exuro Pro Eternus merely repeated past glories; in fact, DARK FUNERAL here exhibited a relatively adventurous grasp of dynamics to suit the more melancholic & romantic themes being explored here. More than that, some 15-plus years after their formation, their power and passion had not lessened one bit. Sadly, Angelus Exuro Pro Eternus was to be the final recorded performance of founding vocalist Emperor Magus Caligula.

Since their formation in 2007, MINENWERFER have pursued a proud 'n' pure vision of black metal idiosyncratically focused on World War I - idiosyncratic, in the sense that the band hail from America but mostly sing in German. What has resulted is a startlingly accomplished canon that has quietly built itself into prolific proportions, with their first album arriving in 2010, followed by albums in 2012 and 2019, and a slew of split releases and EPs in the interim.
Of those many short-length releases, Der Rote Kampfflieger is the oldest and perhaps most curious. Here, MINENWERFER offered the new track “Ace of Aces,” the reworked “Albatros in Flammen,” and two very surprising covers: deep martial industrial artist Striider's “Schüzengraben” and legendary shredder Yngwie J. Malmsteen's early scorcher “I am a Viking.” MINENWERFER for sure have their own identifiable sound, but they're not afraid to push it in strange directions from time to time.

Sweden's MARDUK are not only one of the most long running and respected black metal acts out there, but also one of the most productive.
