Whilst still reasonably early in the career of the band, and with rhythm guitarist Vincent Cavanagh taking on vocal duties only relatively recently for the sublime ‘The Silent Enigma’ opus, the set contained a whole selection of now-established classics from Anathema’s first two studio albums and ‘Pentecost III’ EP, with epics like ‘A Dying Wish’, ‘Sleepless’, and ‘Mine is Yours’ captured in their purest and rawest form in the live setting.
Anathema has spent the vast majority of their career making music that defies description. As part of the “Peaceville three”, along with Paradise Lost & My Dying Bride, Anathema have carved a strong legacy since their inception at the turn of the 1990s, to become a widely revered & respected band within both the metal world & beyond, as their sound & compositions progressed from doom/death metal into more rock & progressive territory with each subsequent release, becoming one of the UK’s most cherished and critically acclaimed rock bands.

When drummer/vocalist Proscriptor McGovern (Russ R. Givens) dissolved Absu on January 27th 2020, his main intention was to splinter the 30-year old faction into a renewed songwriting concord. Proscriptor McGovern’s Apsû is the obvious by-product of that chemical breakdown, which constitutes a new incarnation and direct continuation of Absu’s legacy. Securing the ranks, alongside McGovern, are continuing bassist/vocalist Ezezu (Absu: 2008-2020), new guitar virtuoso Vaggreaz (Possessed, Gruesome) and keyboardist Vorskaath (Zemial, Agatus). Since Absu’s last, unreleased album was to be penned as “Apsû,” McGovern fused the title with his name to form the group. With this much anticipated, self-titled album, McGovern’s objective was to append the signature sound of “mythological occult metal,” but to convolute it with bouts of psychedelia, fusion and vintage electronics. After their highly acclaimed avant-garde debut album "Secret Ambrosian Fire", released by Eisenwald in 2019, Thuringian folklorists MOSAIC return to their black metal roots with their new full-length album "Heimatspuk", delivering a primal symbiosis of atmospheric metal, mystical soundscapes and traditional primal folk elements.
The album continues where its predecessor "Secret Ambrosian Fire" left off. The modern world lies in ruins and has consumed itself. Lyrically, it is permeated by various leitmotifs, such as darkness, sanguine and forest mysticism - as well as the central elements of earth and air - whose attributes and symbolism characterize the album.
Unlike previous MOSAIC releases, there are no guest appearances on this album. The album was written and recorded entirely by Martin van Valkenstijn at his House of Inkantation in Gotha, with musical assistance from Danijel Zambo (Walden, Skognatt) and mastered by Markus Stock (Empyrium, Sun of the Sleepless) at Klangschmiede Studio E in Mellrichstadt.

Now under their third incarnation, the project, previously known as Void Prayer, and originally born under the name of Cave Ritual, delivers here their third full-length record, but appears here very aptly refurbished and reborn in what, sonically, definitely appears to be a culmination of sorts of the sound the band has been molding since its audial shift in 2019.
Although "The Grandiose Return to the Void" had already been a triumphant shift in direction, with "Sarajevski Odisej", a deserved nod to Homer's ancient epic, the Black Plague Circle stalwarts achieve a new, unquestionable triumph in songwriting, with absolute elite orchestration and sound structure. From blazing riffs of majestic, serpentine melodicism, to mind-bending dissonance and the absolutely fiery, ecstatic leads, Izrod appear to approach a sound style closer to that of Misþyrming's most recent LP's, with clear inspiration also from DsO or late era Mayhem, but by all means making their own distinct sound. With much more daring elements like the almost Progressive and Jazzy interludes in tracks like "Siva smrt" and "Tibet više nije Tibet", the bass also absolutely shines in these passages pulsating energy straight into the black dimension.
